Most people suppose that mini notebooks are just like the big ones with the one exception that they are smaller in size. This is a big mistake to think if you want to run resource hungry applications and therefore demand high performance processor and video card.
The point of a mini notebook comes from its size. Since it is small, it is highly portable, and depending on the battery size, it also allows for longer productivity. Normal notebooks are perfect for all kinds of work, let that be design, graphical utilities, web design and you can safely assume that new games will run on them, even if on lower resolution.
Netbooks on the other hand are rather limited in this sense, their internal components are fairly slow and low performance. Do not fear though, if you don't do work that requires you to process large amounts of data, a netbook will be just fine. They are great at connecting the net, sporting all kinds of connectivity. Wifi, bluetooth and 3G is almost always supported, and since the battery often runs for 5 hours or more on one charge, you will be able to get more work done on the go than you would have been able to choosing a bigger, heavier and less portable variation.
Netbooks thanks to their 'slow' parts will also be fairly cheap compared to anything else of full capacity. You can have one for well under $400, in fact more and more models are available every day in the $300 category. For that much money you will be able to get a basic netbook that does all the things a computer of this sort is supposed to, and you are going to be able to enjoy all the benefits.
There are people who know that these little laptops are limited in power and suppose that they are too slow for anything else than checking e-mails. This is absolutely not true, since even the relatively simple 1.6GHz N270 and 1.66GHz N280 are able to run 720p movies given that the right codecs are present. YouTube is more demanding on the processor, therefore you will have to choose at least one with the ION solution from Nvidia.
The graphic chip in those models help the processor play videos, and in latest version of flash they help with flash movies, too. The main point for having a netbook is not watching videos though, but you will be able to do so comfortably even if you choose the most basic 10" model.
When you look at the price tag you should be well aware of the fact that they are a little slower than normal computers, but most are sold with Windows so you will be able to run your favorite programs, even if a little slower than you would expect.
